Google Starts Releasing 3D Movies for the Galaxy XR Headset

Samsung introduced the Galaxy XR headset last month, marking it as the world’s first Android XR device. This headset allows users to enjoy immersive gaming experiences as well as watch 3D media. Following the launch of the Galaxy XR, Google has begun releasing 3D movies that can be viewed on this new device. This move expands the content available for the Galaxy XR and other future Android XR-based headsets.

Google has started adding 3D movies to the Google Play app, as noticed by Reddit users. These movies are available for purchase or rental, enabling users to watch them directly on the Galaxy XR headset. The number of available 3D movies has grown rapidly, increasing from 18 titles just a few days ago to over 50 movies today. However, it is not yet clear how many of these films support 4K resolution or HDR formats.

Wide Selection of 3D Movies Now Available

The growing collection of 3D movies includes popular titles such as G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Hotel Transylvania and its sequels, How to Train Your Dragon, Hugo, I Frankenstein, Jumanji: The Next Level, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jurassic World Rebirth, Megamind, Men In Black 3, No Time To Die, Passengers, Pixels, Resident Evil Retribution, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: Homecoming.

A crowdsourced list of all available 3D movies can be found online, although it remains unclear which countries have access to these titles. Google had mentioned the availability of 3D movies during the Galaxy XR’s launch event, signaling a commitment to expanding immersive media options on the platform.

Galaxy XR’s 3D Capabilities Compared to Competitors

Similar to Apple’s Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR supports MV-HEVC decoding, which enables playback of 3D content, including movies. Despite this capability, Apple’s Vision Pro currently offers a much larger library, with over 300 3D movies available. Google will need to continue expanding its 3D movie offerings to compete with Apple’s extensive collection.

With Google starting to release 3D movies that you can watch on the Galaxy XR, the platform is taking important steps toward enhancing the XR media experience. As the library of 3D content grows, users of the Galaxy XR headset will have more immersive entertainment options at their fingertips.
